About Uasin Gishu

Uasin Gishu County is one of Kenya’s 47 Counties, namely County no.27.

Uasin Gishu has in the recent years been branded Kenya’s hotbed of political and ethnic animosity, best displayed in 2007 post-election violence (PEV), as the hub of the country’s unrest.

Besides the broadcasted 2007 PEV, Uasin Gishu has experienced unrest most election years dating back to 1992, 1998 and 2002.

The County is predominantly occupied by the Kalenjin community but highly cosmopolitan in the urban areas, especially in the headquarter town which is Eldoret.

The County gets destabilized by politics, at all levels. No better time could this have been demonstrated than the period preceding Kenya’s 2017 general elections. The County was cited as a “hot spot” of possible poll violence by  NCIC as well as Security departments. The County deteriorated to sub-tribal divisions triggered by gubernatorial campaigns.

The county is also surrounded by neighboring Counties with historical insecurity concerns. This includes Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, hence the need to foster a culture that emanates peace and cohesion in order to spread this to its neighbors.

Due to this, sad, history, and emerging threats, UASIN GISHU PEACE FORUM was founded in July 2017 by Uasin Gishu residents with an aim of re-writing their story; to be known as a haven of peace and the ‘Home of Champions’.
